An Evening in Brookhaven with Artist James Perkins

Last week, we gathered friends at the Brookhaven home of Jay Johnson and Tom Cashin for an installation by James Perkins, the New York-based sculptor and land artist. The evening was part of Métier’s New York Stories series, which celebrates local artists and the creative communities that form around them.
For the occasion, Perkins installed vibrant geometric sculptures throughout Jay and Tom’s garden. His colorful works drew inspiration from the couple’s Andy Warhol collection — a reflection of their longstanding connection to the artist and his Factory. (Jay was part of Warhol’s inner circle in the late ‘60s and ‘70s, starring in the artist’s 1972 film L’Amour.)
Perkins’ practice explores the relationship between abstraction and landscape. His "post-totem structures" — silk canvases stretched over wooden frames — are buried in the earth for up to two years, allowing the elements to leave their mark. The resulting works bring together geometric precision and the unpredictability of the natural world.
It’s an approach that resonates with Métier's own design philosophy: an appreciation for honest materials, enduring craftsmanship, and objects that grow richer with time.
The tablescape was designed by Alimentari Flâneur's Daniel Emilio Soares, who sourced a silver Mylar tablecloth as a nod to The Factory’s iconic foil-lined walls.
Guests took home Metier turkish towels in Mod Stripe, a custom jacquard weave produced for the Summer 2026 collection.
